Thin Lizzy, formed in Dublin in 1969, is an Irish rock band led by bassist/vocalist/songwriter Phil Lynott. The original lineup included drummer Brian Downey, guitarist Eric Bell, and briefly organist Eric Wrixon. Bell left in 1973, replaced temporarily by Gary Moore, followed by twin guitarists Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson in 1974. Robertson stayed until 1978, when Moore rejoined, later replaced by Snowy White in 1980 and John Sykes in 1982. Keyboardist Darren Wharton joined in 1980, augmenting the lineup. Hits like “Whiskey in the Jar” (1972), “The Boys Are Back in Town” (1976), and “Waiting for an Alibi” (1979) gained international success. Several albums reached the UK top ten, blending hard rock with blues, soul, psychedelic rock, and Irish folk influences. Lynott, the band’s creative force, wrote or co-wrote nearly all their material across twelve studio albums. As the first Black Irishman to achieve rock success, Lynott drew from Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, and Irish literature. The multiracial band included members from both sides of the Irish border and Catholic/Protestant communities during The Troubles. Thin Lizzy’s music is classified as hard rock, distinct from mid-70s heavy metal, per Rolling Stone. AllMusic praises Lynott’s insightful, working-class storytelling. Lynott’s death in 1986 ended the original band, but various incarnations followed. Gorham and Sykes led early revivals, with Sykes departing in 2009. Gorham and Downey continued, forming Black Star Riders in 2012 to record new material. Thin Lizzy has since reunited for occasional concerts. The band’s rhythm section, Lynott on bass and Downey on drums, remained constant through their recording career. Their dual lead guitarists, particularly Gorham and Robertson, defined their signature sound. Despite lineup changes, Thin Lizzy’s legacy endures in rock music. Their influence spans hard rock and heavy metal, inspiring countless artists.
