The anniversary collection

125 years ago, the Munich Philharmonic were founded from the middle of society. It was civic will and commitment that led to the orchestra’s existence. This understanding still shapes them today, and this is how their social role defines:
As a passionate bridge builder between generations of orchestral musicians, conductors, soloists, composers and audiences.

Since its inception, the orchestra has experienced numerous highlights: Gustav Mahler conducted the premiere of his Fourth and Eighth Symphony in Munich, Bruno Walter posthumously raised Mahler’s song from the earth from baptism; the unique performance tradition of the symphonies Anton Bruckner as well as the distinctive sound culture led to the international fame of the orchestra, whose fascinating success story numerous CD productions and archive documents.

Some of these recordings – partly previously unreleased – present the Munich Philharmonic now in its anniversary box for the 125th anniversary. Represented are outstanding conductor personalities such as Hans Knappertsbusch, Fritz Rieger, Eugen Jochum, Rudolf Kempe, Sergiu Celibidache, Zubin Mehta, Lorin Maazel, Günter Wand, Horst Stein, James Levine,
Christian Thielemann and Valery Gergiev, who shape the orchestra’s musical heritage.
